When you hear the phrase “worker safety,” you might picture hard hats and safety vests, but workers can sustain many types of injuries in the workplace. In office settings, people can wind up with repetitive stress injuries (RSI), musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and back injuries from poor ergonomics. At Levinson Chiropractic, we’ve treated many patients suffering from these types of injuries. Good chiropractor care can address many problems stemming from poor workplace ergonomics, helping patients reduce pain and regain strength, flexibility, and full range of motion. While receiving chiropractic care can alleviate many symptoms, a better solution is to avoid these injuries in the first place.

What is Ergonomics?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defines ergonomics as the science of fitting workplace conditions and job demands to the worker. The function of ergonomics is to reduce the conditions that promote workplace injury. Ergonomics can involve modifications to how workers stand or sit, reductions in repetitive motions, or improvements to the working environment.

To improve your workplace ergonomics:

  • Pay Attention to Posture – Whether you’re standing or sitting, posture matters. When standing, do your best to distribute your body weight evenly. When sitting, avoid slouching, leaning, or crossing your legs. Try to keep your hips, shoulders, and ears aligned vertically.
  • Get Moving – Many office workers are tied to a desk, but sitting for long periods of time is hard on your body. Take frequent breaks to move around and stretch. In any type of job, if you’re largely restricted to a single position, be it sitting or standing, it’s imperative to get moving so you can prevent injuries that come with remaining in one position for too long.
  • Invest in the Proper Equipment – You may need an adjustable height desk, an ergonomic keyboard, or wrist rests to minimize your odds of being injured in the workplace.

Regular chiropractic care can help minimize the negative effects of sitting, standing, or repetitive motions. Contact our office to make an appointment with Dr. Levinson for a full evaluation and treatment recommendations.
